My Unique Work Experience: The Alpha Male in the Workplace
When it comes to my work experience, there's no denying that it's been quite interesting. I have a tendency to be quiet on the job, not because I don't have anything to say, but because I prefer to assess people and figure out who I can truly connect with. I gravitate towards those who are smart and have something worthwhile to say, while tuning out those who don't make sense to me. This has often led to me being perceived as aloof, but I assure you, I know my job inside and out.
One particular experience stands out in my career. I decided to try my hand at working in an agency, and to my surprise, within just four years, I found myself in the position of executive director. This was no small feat considering some of the individuals I worked alongside had been with the agency for twenty years or more. It seems that my mere presence exuded an aura of leadership and authority, earning me the title of an alpha male.
Now, you may be wondering what it means to be an alpha male in the workplace. Well, let me shed some light on this intriguing concept.
The Alpha Male: A Natural Leader
An alpha male is often seen as a natural leader, someone who possesses the qualities and characteristics that inspire others to follow. It's not something I consciously strive for, but rather something that seems to come naturally to me. I don't go out of my way to seek promotions or climb the corporate ladder; instead, I find that people simply recognize my abilities and promote me accordingly.
Being an alpha male doesn't mean being domineering or overbearing. It's about having a strong presence, being confident in your abilities, and earning the respect of your colleagues through your actions and expertise. I believe that actions speak louder than words, and this philosophy has served me well throughout my career.
The Power of Observation
One of the key traits of an alpha male is the ability to observe and assess the people around them. This is something I excel at. By taking the time to understand the individuals I work with, I can identify those who are intelligent, capable, and have something valuable to contribute. These are the individuals I choose to engage with and build strong professional relationships with.
On the other hand, I also have the ability to tune out those who don't make sense to me or don't align with my values and goals. This doesn't mean I completely ignore them, but rather I prioritize my interactions and focus my energy on those who can truly make a difference in the workplace.
The Aura of Leadership
It's interesting how certain individuals naturally exude an aura of leadership. This is something that others can sense, even without any explicit actions or words. In my case, it seems that my presence alone conveys a sense of authority and confidence, leading people to view me as someone who can take charge and make things happen.
While it can be flattering to be seen as an alpha male, it also comes with its fair share of challenges. People often have high expectations of you, assuming that you have all the answers and can solve any problem that comes your way. However, I've learned that it's important to be humble and acknowledge that I don't have all the answers. Collaboration and teamwork are key in any successful workplace, and I make sure to surround myself with individuals who complement my strengths and fill in the gaps.
Embracing Your Work Identity
It's important to note that being an alpha male in the workplace is just one aspect of my identity. Outside of work, I have a diverse range of interests and hobbies that make me who I am. While my work persona may be seen as confident and assertive, it's crucial to maintain a healthy work-life balance and not let this identity define me entirely.
Ultimately, my unique work experience as an alpha male has taught me the importance of being true to myself and embracing my natural leadership qualities. It's not something I actively sought out, but rather something that has evolved organically throughout my career. By staying true to who I am and surrounding myself with talented individuals, I've been able to make a positive impact in the workplace and continue to grow both personally and professionally.
After UCLA College of Letters where I obtained PhD is Philosophy, Psychology and Religion I got a teaching job at the University. I felt uneasy teaching. I applied for a job in the mental health field; I got many offers and within two years was running the mental health center where I worked, supervising psychologists and psychiatrists who have been in that field for many decades.
Eventually, I felt bored by the job (of been executive director...I was barely thirty two years old when I was the executive director of the largest mental health agency in the city where I lived) and quit and tried doing other things.
Nothing I tried worked out for me. So, I did other executive director jobs but eventually wound up quitting and returning to college teaching until I felt that teaching is too easy for me; I felt unchallenged being a college professor (I filled my time writing on assorted subjects that interested me).
Eventually, I realized that I have a destiny and fate. My normal routine is to read until I go to sleep (although there is a huge TV in the house, I seldom watch it) and get up around 5 AM, think for a while, and then go to my computer and type the thoughts that I just had in my sleep.
